| Name: | Gremlyn (Sharon) |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 04-15 |
| Location: | New York, United States |
Sharon was born somewhere in the vicinity of the town of Chicoutimi in Quebec, Canada. Exactly where in the vicinity isn't clear, because she was discovered at a few days of age on the doorstep of the Little Sisters of Our Savior Convent in the hills outside the town. Despite their misgivings about an infant with soft blue fur and a tail, the nuns took the baby in. The Mother Superior was of the belief that even if the child were as she might appear - perhaps some sort of demon - then her arrival at the Convent was a signal to the Sisters that she should be taken in and taught the word and nature of God.
Which is what happened. However, the Sisters realised that Sharon's outward form would cause a potentially violent stir if she were allowed to be seen by anyone outside the Order, and as such she grew up strictly within the confines of the convent grounds. As she grew older this became more and more frustrating, and she would often sit in her room on the upper storey, looking out the window over the treetops to the town. She also observed birds of different kinds as they flew over the walls and away, and wished ... prayed ... that one day she would do the same.
At age 12, Sharon began to go through the usual physical changes of puberty, but as always there was a twist - two small bumps also appeared on her shoulder blades. These grew larger, and it soon became apparent that they were, in fact, developing into wings. They matured rapidly to the point where they were capable of lifting her off the ground, and she learned to fly by the time she was 14. By 15 and a half, she had also learned to land. Following several close encounters with trees, walls and the chapel bell.
To her, the appearance of the wings was an answer to her prayers - a gift from God. Unfortunately that gift also led to her disobeying the Sisters and flying outside the boundaries of the convent. On one such night-time excursion she was spotted by some townsfolk, and someone had the 'presence of mind' to take a shot at her with a rifle. Sharon dodged, barely, and the bullet nicked the membrane of her left wing. She made it back to the safety of the convent, but the townspeople, now mobilised, began searching for the 'creature' they had seen. Fearing that the mob would soon reach the convent and the consequences to the Sisters if she was found there, Sharon packed her things and made for the railyards. Hiding in a box car heading south, she eventually ended up in New York, where she fell in with the Morlocks and adopted the name Gremlyn. She stayed with them for over a year, hiding and surviving by her wits, but this was not the life she wanted to find. Sharon feels that she has been gifted by God, and that He must have a purpose for her. In pursuit of this purpose, she left the Morlocks and approached Professor Xavier for enrollment at his School.
Powers; She flies. Gremlyn's wings have reached a final span of approximately 20 feet, and can carry her through the air extremely fast. She is also inordinately flexible and able to withstand the forces exerted on her body during flight. Her other powers include being able to stick to walls, and extendable claws on her hands and feet which can secrete a paralysing venom. At the moment she is focusing on her flying skills, something she didn't have much chance to develop during her time with the subterranean Morlocks.
Personality, strengths and weaknesses; Sharon is very determined and committed to doing her best at all tasks. She is also fairly outspoken and rarely fails to put forward her opinion, which is both a strength and a weakness depending on the situation. Survival among the Morlocks often depended on standing up and fighting for your place or your share, and she now finds it difficult to curb that behaviour in the more civilised environment of the school. She is also aware of the value of family and comradeship - 'us against the world'. She puts great stock in personal loyalty, which again is a double-edged sword, particularly when two sides to whom she has pledged loyalty - even just in her own mind - come into conflict, for example the Morlocks and the X-Men. If she feels that her loyalty or trust has been betrayed she reacts with anger, the extent of which depending on the nature of the assumed betrayal, and it is difficult to persuade her to trust the individual again. She is very good at holding a grudge.
Sharon truly believes that God has given her this form and these powers for a purpose - she does not know what that purpose may be, but until it becomes clear she intends to develop her powers and use them for good. She tends to be a crusader, stubbornly refusing to give up on a project or a cause unless forced to it.
Socially, outside her home environment (the Morlocks or the school) she tends to be shy. She is used to her appearance causing unfriendly or fearful reactions, and beyond the first introduction will wait for anyone new to approach her rather then the other way around. That said, she can also spot a fool at 50 paces and isn't exactly reticent about pointing this out.
